Vote YES End property tax on undeveloped land
Vote “yes” on ballot measure ending property taxes on undeveloped land.
This important proposal has the potential to save thousands of acres around the state
from development and preserve them for conservation, hunting and fishing.
Landowners would be required to sign a conservation easement to restrict use of the land forever.
A number of environmental groups including Audubon of Florida support this measure.
Please vote “yes” in November and urge your friends and neighbors to do so too.
Budget Cuts Threaten Moccasin Lake Nature Park
The City of Clearwater has proposed cuts in funding to Moccasin Lake, the city's only environmental education center and a precious piece of natural habitat. Moccasin Lake serves tens of thousands of visitors each year and offers youth camps, bird walks, alternative energy and resource conservation programs, cultural and historical programs, and much more. It is also where the Clearwater Audubon Society and other local environmental groups hold their meetings. Clearwater residents can contact their city commissioners and tell them how important Moccasin Lake is to our community, especially our children.
Support a Ban on Development of County Preserve Lands
The Pinellas County Commission continues to hold meetings to decide the future of Brooker Creek Preserve. After strong opposition from environmentalists to locating ball fields in the preserve, the Commission proposed an alternative site on school district property. In addition, a charter amendment to protect preserve lands has gained some support from commissioners, but its adoption is far from certain. The Commission still must decide how much of the preserve will be used for utilities purposes. Please contact your county commissioners and tell them to ban development on all our county's preserve lands.
Support Increased Protection for the Gopher Tortoise
State officials are deciding how this keystone species, whose numbers are seriously threatened by development, will be protected. Please contact your representatives to the Florida House and Senate and support: 1) an end to the suffocation of gopher tortoises; 2) more effective relocation standards when gopher tortoise habitat is developed; and 3) designation as a "threatened" species, which gives more protection than the current designation as a "species of special concern."
